at UCLA declined when comparing his last 3 years to his 1st 3 yrs. Chip was the opposite, went 10-21 his 1st 3 years, 1 win over sc, no bowl games. In Chip's last 3 years, UCLA improved to 25-13, beat sc twice, went 1-1 in bowl games. So in that sense, UCLA football did improve during Chip's 6 years as HC. I hope I'm wrong but IMO, 25-13 with 2 wins over sc during a 3 yr stretch is a record that we likely won't often see at UCLA in the near-medium future.
But back to your original point that we shouldn't have fired Jim after yr 6. I disagree, we should have fired Jim especially given that we had a chance to hire Chip. Chip didn't work out how we'd hoped but in November of 2017, potentially replacing Jim for Chip was a no-brainer for the AD and most (I know, not you... :) Bruin fans.
