The Pete Rose situation is just an all around tragedy.

The Shakespearian kind.

If he had chosen to exercise a little humility he might have had a different outcome. But that wouldn't have been on-brand for Pete Rose.

I liked Rose. I mean, as a Dodger fan, I hated him. But I liked him. He made himself the guy you hated playing against.

But betting on baseball, considering baseball's history, was just too much poison for MLB to swallow. I can't blame the MLB.

History will always know he had a HOF career. As a young man, I figured Rose as a first ballot certainty. But he did the one thing that will keep him out of it.

The only thing that will change it is if baseball someday decides players betting on games is okay. It shouldn't be. I don't see him getting in the Hall in our lifetimes, or our grandchildren's lifetimes.

That doesn't mean I'm going to bed happy tonight. It frankly depresses me.
