This doesn’t really make sense. The only sport that makes money is football. It also doesnt make money at many institutions. Basketball makes some $$c, but probably not enough to move the needle for an entity to bid on it and for the school to off-load it. All the other sports are net negatives.

Therefore, nobody would want to buy an athletics department, they only want about 30 football programs. Any $$ that a private entity would utilize to purchase the football program would have to be reinvested into the athletics department to fund alll the other sports. There wouldn’t be much for scholarships.

If you are not going to bifurcate football from everything else, the University is t going to receive much $$$. Almost every university loses money on its athletics. Some make $$ but that’s primarily because of donations. Will those donations go to State U or to Company X or just not be made anymore?

Thr benefit a school would get is offloading all the admin expenses of having an athletics department. What public entity have you ever encountered that wants to shed employees?
