He began as a position coach at Michigan and moved his way up the ladder to co-offensive coordinator where he was the play caller for two seasons before taking over for Harbaugh.
We, on the other hand, hired our running backs coach for six or seven seasons whose only promotion was adding an "Associate Head Coach" tag last season. No coordinator or play-calling experience.
But to another (and perhaps your) point, maybe a program like Michigan should be casting a wider net when their head coaching position becomes available.
