If you wanted a former player, why not just go with Tony White, who is at least a credible figure in the sport and comes off as head coach material.

Foster is no head coach. He's not even coordinator material.

I saw someone wrote the other day that Jarmond wanted Foster because he wants people to see the Chip era as a success, and continuity furthers that perception.
