Stars have mattered

The entire star system is fading in importance in the emerging NIL-Portal era. Prior to that, 5 star recruits mattered but all the other ranks were noise.

Recruiting 5 stars led to titles going all the way back to the BCS era. A program could accumulate them since they couldn't transfer easily. Alabama's back-to-back title team had 20 of 22 starters who were 5 star recruits. All the other title teams had more than 14 (Clemson). Since all the top teams had a bevy of four stars, the differentiating factor between winner and also-rans at the top were the 5 stars.

Now, the 5 stars can dilute that concentration by transferring, making competition more even and enabling titles like Michigan's to be built with transfers. We should see less concentration of titles now, and I sense this is what moved Nick Saban to the broadcast booth.
