The other thing I wish a reporter would call him out on is when he goes into that whole Dodgers diatribe about how they can afford whatever they want. Can a reporter push back and say, “Sure, that’s obviously an advantage, but how do you explain the Mets? Or, more importantly, the Brewers and Rays?”
I’m not saying payroll doesn’t matter-it absolutely does. The Dodgers have a massive financial advantage, and pretending otherwise would be silly. But at some point, constantly pointing to what the Dodgers can afford becomes an easy way to explain away your own shortcomings. Small-market teams like the Brewers and Rays have shown that you can still win and possibly sustain a winning organization without spending anywhere near the Dodgers’ level.
I’d just like someone to ask him where the line is between acknowledging a legitimate disadvantage and using that disadvantage as an excuse. Because those are two very different things.
