What is a more difficult matchup? A small quicker player guarding a bigger slower player or a bigger slower player guarding a smaller quicker player? Both matchups create problems.

But defense isn't a factor of one-on-one matchups. For a good defensive coach like Cronin, it's all about team defense. Take Tyger Campbell for example. He was small and not even super quick. But he played high IQ disciplined defense by not gambling for steals, fouling or getting out of proper defensive alignment and communicated well with teammates. He was not a defensive liability except in rare cases where the opposition had a guard who could take advantage of a size disparity and a coach who knew how to exploit it. And even then, he got help from his teammates.
