Of course I just used Walton as a player who would have been affected. I had saved his quote but I lost it. He said something like after his senior year he wished he didn't have to leave UCLA when his eligibility was up. An iconoclast like him might just have stayed if they let him. In fact, he was drafted by the ABA Dallas team after his junior year but said he had no interest in leaving school.
Money wasn't all that important to him. He rode a bicycle to practices and home games in Portland instead of driving expensive cars like the other players and mainly wore jeans and tie-dye shirts. One-of-a kind.
