On the court, Walt was the toughest guy there was. But who was he really?
I remember vividly, one day there were several bridge tables going in the Coop. Walt was playing at one. And a crowd began to gather around the table. Several friends and I got up and walked over to see what was going on.
Walt was playing a Grand Slam contract - iirc it was 7 Diamonds. (For the uninitiated, that meant the declarer - Walt - had to take all 13 tricks to make his contract.
The game got more and more tense as Walt ruffed a club in his hand, crossed to the board and ruffed another one.
It all came down to the final card and Walt was milking it for all it was worth. He did a build up and finally slammed the final card in his hand onto the table and claimed his Grand Slam.
The final card was the 13th and only remaining club in the deck.
There was a flurry of sound and then a sudden complete silence like a deep taking in of breath as everyone noticed what Walt's last card was - the final club. But he had roughed two clubs in hand (which, by the rules, you can only do if you have no cards of that suit remaining in your hand.
Then everyone began to speak at once and we were all saying the same things - you can't do that, no, that's wrong!
And Walt just completely broke up laughing, tossed the cards down onto the table, got up and simply walked out of there leaving everyone grinning behind him for the rest of the day.
Really interesting guy and a great guy to have gone to university with for so many of us - especially basketball fans
