Watching Joe Philon

I watched his Montverde team play Dynamic Prep. This seems like a good matchup to judge his play, since every starter for Dynamic Prep is heading to a P5 school.

He spent most of the game matched up with the #1 player in the class of 2027, Marcus Spears.

The thing that stands out the most is his defense. Spears wasn't able to do much against Philon. He was held to 9 points and most of them were when Philon wasn't on the floor. Joe is tall, with long arms and good defensive instincts. He is also a good leaper, although he didn't do it very much.

The other end of the floor is more questionable. If you want to look at the bright side, he is very unselfish and a good passer. The negative side is that he didn't seem to be aggressively looking for his shot or very good at creating it. Maybe it is because he was guarded quite a bit by Spears, who is a good defender as well.

In this game, he didn't do a good job of hitting jump shots. However, he was hitting his free throws.

He got a couple of tough rebounds in traffic. He had the potential to be a good rebounder, although he is thin.

A possible concern is that he fouled out with around 6 minutes to play.

I expect he will play as a freshman, since Cronin will definitely like his defense.
