The truth is that May has enjoyed success everywhere he's coached. I see some people dismissing that success as the result of cheating, but I'm not sure I buy that narrative. From my perspective, May was simply operating within the realities of the modern game. It's worth remembering that for years at the mid-major level, he was on the receiving end of player poaching. In many ways, he was doing what had been done to him season after season.
Some seem to believe that Mara wasn't going anywhere without some behind-the-scenes influence from May. I disagree. Mara looked like a player who was already likely to move, and I think plenty of programs would have pursued him regardless.
May now has a strong situation in Dallas, along with what many believe is a transformational talent in Cooper Flagg. I can absolutely see him having significant success there. Yes, that Michigan team was talented, but it wasn't dramatically more talented than several other top programs. The difference was that he got that group to play exceptionally well together.
Ignore some of the spin that's out there. May is a very good coach who viewed the game through a different lens than many of his peers, and that approach paid off.
