Many markets are regulated for the greater good, however that is determined. I don't think that fans decry markets and capitalism. They decry that college sports are decoupling from college which they think is not for the greater good. Student is disappearing from student athlete, at least in basketball and football. Many fans yearn for the day when more players had an attachment to their university. That is what UCLA fans loved about the players on the women's team this yr. So much success in college sports now hinges on offering recruits the biggest bags. There is no loyalty for many players as they transfer for a bigger bag next yr. And that makes it ugly for many long time fans. It's long overdue that players get to financially benefit. But many fans decry the lack of regulation to balance the interests of players and university stakeholders.
