like Michigan did always seem to be better than most. When they get guys like 6'9 Johnson, 6'9 Yaxel and 7'3 Mara, and a good 6'1 PG in Cadeau (I've read Cadeau was UCLA's back up choice if they couldn't sign Dent) they have the makings of a championship team that can match up well with just about any opponent.
From what I've seen in recent years, I believe the problem with UCLA is they haven't been successful at signing the appropriate balance/skill mix of players. With holes in the mix (this year primarily the center position and lack of a couple of solid/dominant rebounders), this imbalance often results in bad match ups during the season in league and tournament play.
As a great coach (and most know who I'm talking about) once said, "teams with the best players usually win". From what I've seen, it's been quite some time since UCLA achieved that standard in men's basketball.
