I watched their postgame press conference. The impression that i got is that those baskets came in garbage time. I've watched sc play a few times this season. Jones hasn't been starting - she's on the bench behind Malia Samuels, who's a dawg on D, a nothing burger on O. Gottlieb, from what I've seen, uses Jones as a back-up PG (she's a pretty good PG), and then when sc gets behind by a decent margin, she'll throw Jones in there and get her three pointers hoping it's one of her two super hot nights per season. I usually isn't. Without checking it, I'm sure I've seen Jones have a 1-6 from 3 night, or 0-6.
The funny thing is she torched South Carolina last year, too. The other thing in common with that game last year is it was a blow out (in our favor). It's one thing to come out and hit threes when there is nothing at stake. Quite another to do it when the game is on the line.
I wonder how many times they took her to the hole. Or, if they bothered, b/c the game was out of reach before she started having any effect on it.
I'd love to have Jones on the roster. I think that she could help against small quick guards, on the defensive side. And, she has that game once or twice, per year where she's unconscious. But, she's shooting 33% on threes this season. And, SoCaro has big guards.
Davidson said last night what a great influence Jones has had on her. Jones has said how much she loves her teammates. Gottlieb has said that Jones and Dunn are trojies for life. Like I said, it wouldn't have hurt to have her on this roster as a situational option. But, not if that would, in any way, have interfered with us getting Kneepkens (I don't know why it would have but you never know). It was so awesome to see the seniors walking the perimeter of the court, waving to the fans last night. That could have been Jones, too. But, if she's happy with her choice, great.
I'll always be a Barker fan. I love her personality and toughness, and I feel like she could have brought something extra to this team. I'm ambivalent about Jones. She made a choice that was best for her. Probably assumed she'd be starting. Maybe got more money. Certainly didn't want to be a 3rd/4th option in the guard rotation. Sensible decision. I understand it.
