When trying to uses up the entire shot clock, or at the end of the first half, teams usually run down the clock. Traditionally you would start around the 10-second mark.
Now I see lots of teams start with around 7 seconds left. It often becomes obvious who is going to have to take the shot, and that helps the defense.
Case in point: Today Aberdeen of Kentucky held the ball so long, everyone knew he would shoot. Santa Clara double him and turned him over.
At a certain point, waiting too long makes is much less likely you will score.
