a self supporting artist (paintings and drawings) for 40 years - Sonoma State for undergrad, Pratt for graduate school. I loved the critiques. Sometimes they were brutal but that's where a lot of my education took place and a lot of growth and understanding. Of course not all critiques are equal and some are more worthwhile than others. While each individual may differ on which ones were more worthwhile than others they are all important. But even with the vagaries of critiques I always looked forward to them whether I ended up elated or crushed. I had one prof who was especially tough. I was always prepared for critiques but especially for his - Frederick Spratt at San Jose State. The most important thing I learned from critiques is the ability and the essential need for independent artist to be self-critical. I have applied that ability to every aspect of my life - even playing and coaching basketball.
