We see this in football with Notre Dame. I believe it exists with UCLA in basketball. Each school had a period where they dominated their sport. Decades later we are seeing people, in essence, "dis" these schools after decades of harboring a sort of passive mindless disdain after being fed a steady diet of "hate" for the "Goliaths."
In my basketball life, growing up during UCLA's dominance, I had peers who grew up in the same period but from other parts of the country. Even going into the 21st century these ex-players and ex-coaches still had disdain for UCLA just because they were highly successful at one time. They couldn't really explain this hatred but they had it.
There's similar hatred displayed for teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, Lakers, the old Celtics of the sixties (although that's not so much anymore) - all experiencing great success at one time and being viewed as iconic winners. Human nature can be a funny thing.
