My feelings about this coach aren’t any mystery, but I have to admit feeling some relief reading a more honest, clear-eyed assessment of Cronin’s aptitude and general competence. Just to be clear, Cronin was not a coach anyone here ever looked at as a possible Bruin coach prior to his being hired. Anyone saying otherwise is lying. This program has always had higher aspirations than anything Cronin achieved at Cincinnati or wherever tf else he has coached.
Cronin basically won the lottery getting this job, being given a chance to coach a true blue blood program with an absolutely loaded roster. And some of the guys like Campbell and Jaquez were older players, so things really could not have been set up more favorably for Cronin as he started at UCLA. He had a forgettable regular season in 2021 and then got incredibly lucky when the team heated up and got to the FF. The roster that Alford built did what it was expected to.
Fast forward a few years, and Cronin has regressed to his typical performance. Average seasons with talented teams. Never doing anything particularly noteworthy for UCLA hoops.
He’s never been good enough for this job, and now many more are seeing that. The sooner he’s canned, the sooner we can win another title.
