Last year, Mara had shown by mid-January that he should have been starting and developing as a starter. If Cronin truly had a plan to make Mara the post for this year, he needed to be starting Mara as soon as he showed he was ready midway through the season last year, and developed him into getting meaningful minutes as a starter last year.
Not doing so both doomed us last year, as well as early this year. We may have been much more effective on offense late in the year if Mara had been starting. Good enough to beat Tennessee's defense? Probably not, but if he had developed like he has with Michigan, maybe...
