Every time Amarri Monroe gets into his car and heads back Quinnipiac's campus, his GPS system refers to his dormitory as "home."
Not Newburgh, N.Y., where he grew up. Not Wofford College in South Carolina, where he began his college career. And not any of the numerous Power Five programs (including UConn) that vied for his services through the transfer portal a few weeks ago.
And so, while he still wasn't 100 percent committed to leaving Hamden, Monroe entered the portal last month. And he was quickly deluged with offers from some of the biggest programs in the nation: Kansas, Tennessee, Miami, Creighton, Kansas State.
"I had a couple of genuine conversations (with other schools), but a lot of it was just about money," he reported. "I didn't really feel like I wanted that for myself. I wanted somewhere I can be wanted, a genuine relationship."
Monroe has found a home at Quinnipiac. And no amount of money — at least two, three, four times more than what Quinnipiac offered to keep him — could compel him to leave.
