let's ballpark UCLA's NIL budget at about $10 million - in the ballpark from everything I've read and heard.
#1 need was a PG and we spent $3 million on Dent.
We got some back (at least at last year's prices) graduating Kobe and Lazar. And add some other lower amount players: Mack, Andrews, Kyle. And we don't have to pay Mara's expected $1.5 million. So maybe $2.25 million there meaning we still had about $8 million and change.
Re-up Bilodeau, Dailey, Clark and Perry at this year's prices you'd guess perhaps $4 million thee? Plus a bit for Freeny and Jamerson - $4.6? Xavier had to cost us near a million. Maybe $800K? Brown $700,000? That total would take us over $7 million right there. And inflation in the portal market has been hit by around 30% inflation this year so likely I'm figuring low.
(No, I don't think those prices make sense in a step-back and observe mode of thinking but I do think that's what schools are paying for guys today.)
Anyway, we figure to have less than $1 million left in the pot and we'd like to bring in another wing (emphasis on defense) and another post, a safer pick up.
No way does that cover guys we would get excited about just viewing it in the fantasy recruit world. And certainly no way at all we get two of them for that.
Burries should be terrific. But he's gong to be getting upwards of $2 million and as high as $3 million - split the difference and say $2.5 but that's likely to be low. At that level, he needs to have the ball in his hands and be the key element in your offense and, as a freshman, it could well take him several months to start paying off in such a role. And Dent is a top 5 recruit not just for his dribbling and passing but also for his scoring. You pay $3 million for a PG, he's got to be the focus of your offense. And he has to be able to also defend his position at the other end of the court. As a senior, Dent is a lot more likely to be able to do that than a true freshman.
So completely agree with you - fun "fantasy recruit" territory. Too bad we don't have a deeper supply of billionaire super donors to make these dreams all come true
