Once a player has a grasp of the fundamentals which all coaches provide, it's primarily up to the player to make himself into a good shooter. You have to be able to understand your problems (many times mostly mental or lack of confidence) and experiment with many repetitions to find what works effectively for you. With little imagination or creativity most players will struggle if they can't find that sweet spot in their shooting motion and touch. Of course, if you can't solve your shooting problems on your own, having someone watch you shoot (like a personal trainer who is imaginative and creative when it comes to shooting technique) that can give you advice on things to try will certainly help. But coaches on a college team rarely have time to spend with individuals and acting like a personal trainer. That's been my experience.
