Most fans are tiny. Most fans have little to no ability when it comes to scoring the bball.
So to the extent they have any "identity" related to bball, they identify with:
1. D over O. Since they have no o skill, they pride themselves on playing "tough" d (which means they're a hack and just foul all the time)
2. Littles over bigs. Their envy of tall players is palpable.
3. Coaches who are abusive bullies over calm, cool, collected coaches who are good at o and whose players like playing for them. Most "fans" envy players and love seeing them disciplined and treated like indentured servants because they like seeing them put in their place. These players, in the eyes of fans, have been handed a winning genetic lottery ticket. And they're jealous of that. Try to count the number of fans who express the sentiment, "man, if I had that guy's size..."
Trust me, you can't count that high
