Some yrs ago on BZ, we had a very principled poster on BZ who was arguably THE biggest proponent here of the +/- stat. His log-in name was mel.

We were (and I imagine still are) at polar ends as to the efficacy of exactly what the +/- stat represents and what degree of precision is incorporated in its measures. mel was all in on that metric. As per your ? at the end of your above post, I think the +/- stat has limited value in that it is purely a *derivative* stat for an individual player in that 5-man collective, Every 5-man collective, on both the O and D end, represents a different dynamic, not to mention the 5-man collective features variability as to how ball-centric (usage) each player is and what they disproportionately contribute to that 5-man collective.

I happen to think Dailey is a key cog on this team becuz he can score at two levels and rebound while doing a solid job in CMC’s man-D. But, the question is, how much of that bigly +17 was a foul-saddled Eric and how much of it was derived from the solid quartet he was playing with down the final 8 or so mins, relative to his being glued to the pine for some 20 or so mins becuz of extreme foul trouble in the roughly 32 preceding game mins.
