Sometimes crosswinds are manageable, and sometimes they aren't and it's prudent divert to another airport. With GPS either on the panel or on a tablet, it's really, really hard to get lost in this day and age. And yeah, unfortunately some pilots go into "Top Gun" mode and try to show off. Way too often they end up killing themselves and sometimes others.
