Why did basketball NIL grow "exponentially"?

As LAT quotes Cronin in a June 24 fluff piece by Bolch, "Our NIL grew exponentially". There's no way to know if "exponentially" should be taken literally, but at least figuratively Cronin is saying NIL got a huge increase.

Does anyone have any insight on this? What happened? Who did it? How did it come about?
