You don't "produce" lottery picks, you recruit them. Most of the lottery picks are one-and-dones. The first 13 picks last year were freshmen or one year out of high school age pros. This year, about 80% of the projected lottery picks are the same. They were all on mock drafts before they even played in college.
If you can win without lottery picks, that is a positive for a coach. Coaches like Calipari promote themselves as producing pros over winning games by showcasing young players. Who needs that?
