I do think that a huge issue with the subpar performance of the Euros was the departure of Simovic.
He was a huge factor in their recruitment, and I do believe that he would have been much better at developing them. He was probably the main link to the team and program and best communicator with all of them, and I think that his departure left a major hole there, yanking the rug out from what was a top recruiting class at the time, and kneecapping their transition to UCLA.
