West came to our school once for some kind of program. We were in the gym and I was sitting behind him. Being a big UCLA fan at a young age, I declared in a loud voice: "Walt Hazzard is better than Jerry West!" He turned around and gave me the dirtiest look one can give and said "We'll see about that, son". In later years, I'd seen him around the UCLA gym a few times, but never had the courage to remind him of the incident.
Later on, I modeled my game after West. His signature move was a pull-up jumper off the dribble. You don't see that much in today's NBA.
