He was being paid to call games. It was not within his purvue at the time he did it to criticize Howland the way he did. It angered me even though I agreed with some of his sentiment. He was out of line and should have been fired.

Then, relatedly, he passive-aggressively praised Arizona, the UCLA fans' main rival, at UCLA's expense. He knew it would bother ME. I had no use for him as an announcer after that. I still don't. IOW, I don't look back and think, "I was too hard on Walton". He was the most self-indulgent sports announcer I ever heard, by far. I began turning off the sound when watching sports because of him. I didn't trust he wouldn't say something to anger me, although he very well might never have again once Howland was gone. It was not his place, second greatest Bruin of all time, or no, He was being paid very good money to NOT say those things.

That said, I understand that otherwise he was a pretty great person, definitely the second greatest Bruin. My sympathy goes out to his family.
